Extra Credit Reading Notes: Hans Christian Andersen, Part B

I chose the Little Mermaid for my reading because I was interested in how different it was from the Disney version. A lot of it is the same to the Disney version such as the little mermaid being a princess as well as having sisters. She is also into a prince and would do anything to be with him. She ends up going to the sea witch to transform herself into a human. This is where the difference between the Andersen tale and the Disney tale occurs. In this story when she changes her tail into human legs every step she takes is like a knife cutting into her. That is not at all like the Disney story. However, like the Disney story she does trade her voice for the transformation. Spoiler but the prince marries another girl and the mermaid has until sunrise before she dies. Her sisters offer her a knife that if she cuts out the prince’s heart her tail will grow back. They leave and allow her to make her decision.
